Henry Bergh (1813–1887) was an American diplomat and philanthropist who founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in 1866. Dogs were the first to be domesticated in 13,000 to 10,000 B.C., from its wolf-like ancestor, Canis Lupus. Evidence of cats near human settlements dates back to 8,000 B.C., but it is not clear whether they were domesticated or whether wild cats were encouraged to live near humans. Cats were an important part of agricultural societies. Egyptians are believed to be the first to domesticate them. They most likely raised kittens to protect their grains from rats. Over the years, this relationship with animals has only grown stronger, and today, humans fight for their rights.
